Biggenden is situated on the Isis Highway approximately 90km northwest of Maryborough and 100km southwest of Bundaberg. Biggenden is a rural community, with a town population of 900 and a district population of approximately 1600. It has an average annual rainfall of 860mm. Biggenden is approximately a three hour drive from Brisbane.
Surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges, Biggenden boasts tourist attractions such as Mt.Walsh National Park, Coongarra Rock, Historic Chowey Bridge and Paradise Dam on the Burnett River. Biggenden is only an hour from the beautiful warm sandy beaches of the Fraser Coast. The town boasts ample green space, sporting fields, an airstrip, a P-10 state school and a community Daycare and Kindergarten Centre.
Recreational pursuits include close access to numerous national parks and camping grounds, water activities at Paradise Dam, a social touch football competition, an active Pony Club and numerous cultural and physical activities for children.
Biggenden’s hospital underwent a major redevelopment in 2011/2012. The new $12.5 million facility provides 7 acute and 11 aged care beds. Biggenden’s health care services also include a two full time General Practitioners and visiting allied health professionals including an optometrist, podiatrist, diabetes educator, women’s health nurse, physiotherapist and psychologist. Passenger transport services linking Biggenden to Bundaberg and Maryborough operate regularly.
Primary production is the most significant industry in the region with beef and dairy cattle being predominant. Other agricultural pursuits include grain crops, piggeries, peanuts, citrus and timber. The area is also rich in minerals with the Biggenden Mine which closed operation in June 1999. Gold, bismuth and magnetite were extracted from the mine a quarry now operates crushing the over burden.
Some of the local industries include a livestock selling centre, domestic meatworks, engineering works, beef and dairy cattle, grain, peanuts and citrus. The area has the potential to absorb new industry, with good road links to the upper North Burnett, South Burnett, Coral Coast and Fraser Coast.
